Arthritis

Arthritis is common in both dogs and cats. Inflammation and pain can affect any of the load-bearing joints.

Symptoms include stiffness in the morning, trouble rising or climbing stairs, lameness or limping and lethargy. Many dogs and most cats show no symptoms at all. They hide their discomfort well. Others gradually start acting "old."

Your veterinarian can diagnose arthritis with a physical exam and x-rays. Treatment begins with weight control. A thinner, lower body weight puts less strain on affected joints. Anti-inflammatory drugs, prescribed carefully, can control pain. Gentle exercise can reduce stiffness. Food additives such as omega-3-fatty acids, glucosamine and chondroitin help lubricate joints. Warm, soft bedding helps to reduce morning stiffness.

Treatment for arthritis can slow its progress and control pain. Most dogs and cats need long-term treatment to keep symptoms controlled.
