Dental Care

Believe it or not, dogs and cats are diagnosed with dental diseases more than other infections. Needless to say, nobody wants their pet suffering from a painful inflammatory condition in which bacteria attacks the gums, periodontal ligaments and bone tissue that surrounds and supports the teeth.

So what is a good pet owner to do? Simple, aside from regular brushing, have one of our veterinarians examine your pets mouth at their annual exams.  Regular dental checkups are important to maintaining not only your pet's oral health, but overall health.

Stage 1 Gingivitis: Gum tissue around the teeth can become inflamed and swollen. Plaque and tartar are usually present on the teeth.

Stage 2 Mild Periodontitis: Inflammation progresses to an infection that starts to destroy gum and bone tissue around the teeth. This can lead to discomfort for the dog, and bad breath may be noticeable.

Stage 3 Moderate Periodontitis: The continuing infection de-stroys more tissue around the teeth, often causing bleeding of gums and loosening of teeth. The discomfort and pain can affect eating habits & behavior.

Stage 4 Severe Periodontitis: Extensive infection is tearing down even more of the attach-ment tissues (gum and bone). Teeth are at risk of being lost.

Preventive Care

As easy as it is for your pet to get periodontal infection, it's just as easy for you to prevent it. The fist step is brushing you pet's teeth on a regular basis to reduce plaque buildup and gin-givitis. You should use a special toothbrush and toothpaste designed for you pet.

If your pet displays any of these symptoms, serious perio-dontal diseases may be present.

Bad breath

A yellowish-brown crust of tartar on the teeth near the gum line
